Measure the usable sleeping space

Measure your dog lying stretched out from nose to the base of the tail, then compare that length with the manufacturer's interior sleep surface. For bolster beds, outside dimensions may include raised edges that your dog cannot lie flat across. Leave space for turning and changing positions.

What support should you look for?

Compare the stated foam or fill construction, thickness, base stability and how easily your dog can step into the bed. A heavier dog may compress soft fill more than a lighter dog. Product descriptions and supplier size charts are more useful than a generic “large” or “extra large” label.

Flat beds versus bolster beds

A flat mattress gives a dog that sprawls a continuous surface. A bolster bed gives dogs that curl or lean an edge to rest against, but it can reduce usable interior room. Neither style suits every dog.

Cleaning and placement

Check whether the cover is removable and what the manufacturer says about washing it. Measure the floor area at home, including room for your dog to approach the bed without stepping over furniture.
