Dog bed size labels are a starting point, not a universal standard. One brand's large may have less usable sleeping space than another's. The most useful measurement is the space your dog can actually lie on.

Measure your dog in a natural resting position

Watch your dog sleep and note whether they curl into a ball or stretch onto their side. Measure the space they occupy from nose to rear and across their resting position. Add a little room for repositioning, then compare those measurements with each bed's published dimensions.

Overall size versus interior sleeping space

A bolster or donut bed may have a large outside diameter but a smaller center cushion. Check the inside dimensions if available. If only exterior dimensions are listed, ask for clarification rather than assuming the full width is usable.

Choose a shape that fits the sleep style
