Dog beds collect hair, dirt and everyday odors. The safest cleaning method depends on the bed's cover, fill, foam and manufacturer's care instructions. Before putting anything in the washing machine, check the exact product label.

Start with the care label

Look for instructions about removable covers, water temperature, detergent, drying and whether the insert can get wet. A removable cover does not automatically mean the foam or fill is machine washable.

Remove loose hair and debris

Shake out loose dirt where appropriate, then use a vacuum or a pet-hair tool suited to the fabric. Inspect seams, zippers and any areas where dirt collects.

Wash a removable cover if permitted

Follow the manufacturer-listed washing instructions. Close zippers or fasteners as directed, use a detergent appropriate for your pet and avoid adding products not recommended by the manufacturer. If your dog has sensitive skin, ask your veterinarian about suitable cleaning products.

Clean non-removable beds carefully

For a bed that cannot be machine washed, follow its spot-cleaning instructions. Avoid soaking foam or other components unless the manufacturer specifically allows it. Thorough drying matters because trapped moisture can lead to odor and damage.

Dry before reassembly

Use only the drying method and heat setting allowed by the care label. Make sure the cover and insert are fully dry before putting the bed back together.

When to replace a bed

Check for damaged seams, exposed fill, broken zippers or materials your dog could ingest. Replace a bed if it can no longer be cleaned or used safely.
